Quick cooking notes

  • Core ingredients include lean ground beef, red potatoes, onion, condensed cream of mushroom soup.
  • Follow all 8 steps in order for the intended texture and doneness.
  • Ingredient quantities listed below are for 6 servings.

Ingredients

  • 500 g lean ground beef
  • 680 g red potatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 1 medium onion (chopped)
  • 10.5 oz condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 0.75 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease an 8x8-inch casserole dish.
  2. Place a large skillet over medium heat and brown the ground beef. When the beef is about halfway cooked, add the chopped onion and continue cooking until the beef is fully browned and the onion is soft and translucent.
  3. Drain any excess fat from the skillet, then season the beef mixture lightly with some of the salt and black pepper.
  4. Arrange one-third of the beef and onion mixture in the bottom of the prepared casserole dish. Top it with one-third of the sliced red potatoes.
  5. Repeat the layers two more times, ending with a layer of potatoes on top. Sprinkle the remaining salt and black pepper over the potatoes.
  6. Spoon the condensed cream of mushroom soup evenly over the top of the casserole, spreading it gently so it covers most of the potatoes.
  7. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Uncover and continue baking for 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is bubbling.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
