Quick cooking notes

  • Core ingredients include soy sauce, all-purpose flour, paprika, vegetable broth.
  • Follow all 9 steps in order for the intended texture and doneness.
  • Ingredient quantities listed below are for 4 servings.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for coating)
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 cup plant-based milk
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 4 tbsp vegan butter (for gravy)
  • 400 g seitan (sliced)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt to create the coating mixture.
  2. Dip each slice of seitan into the flour mixture, ensuring it is fully coated.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the coated seitan slices and fry until golden brown on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side.
  5. Remove the fried seitan from the skillet and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  6. In the same skillet, melt the vegan butter over medium heat, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom.
  7. Whisk in the remaining flour mixture and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly browned.
  8. Slowly add the vegetable broth and soy sauce, whisking continuously until the gravy thickens.
  9. Serve the fried seitan hot, topped with the milk gravy.
