Instructions
- Place an oven rack in the center position and heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) for at least 10 minutes so the temperature stabilizes before baking.
- Lightly butter or spray an 8-inch square baking dish, then set it on a rimmed baking sheet to catch any bubbling juices during baking.
- Spread the 0.5 cup coarsely chopped macadamia nuts in a dry 10-inch skillet over medium heat and toast for 3-5 minutes, stirring often with a heatproof spatula, until the nuts smell fragrant and show light golden spots; transfer them to a plate to cool.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the 6 cups sliced apples, 0.25 cup granulated sugar, 1 tbsp lemon juice, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 0.125 tsp ground nutmeg, and 2 tbsp of the divided all-purpose flour, then toss with a rubber spatula for about 1 minute until the apple slices are evenly coated and no dry flour is visible.
- Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared 8-inch square baking dish and spread it into an even layer, pressing lightly so the fruit fills the corners without compacting it too tightly.
